Start with Why
15 years on, I'm still inspired by Simon Sinek's Ted Talk.
Start with why.
Simple words with a lot of context packed underneath them, from which we can derive significant meaning.
The thrust of Simon Sinek’s cornerstone TEDx Talk in 2009 was this :
The world’s most popular, innovative brands don’t talk about what they do. They talk about why they do it.
Sure, what they do and how they do it is a part of the message (there’s a functional element to brand communications by necessity). But those things aren’t the focus, they’re a bit of an afterthought.
Purpose drives us. We align meaningfully with purposes and causes that we believe in.
When a brand starts with why they do what they do, it has a better chance of resonating with an audience. At least, if that why is authentic and not just a shovelful of contrived horseshit… it’s really hard to fake why, folks tend to be able to sniff that out when it comes from a brand.
Ultimately, I believe that we gravitate to purpose because—deep down—we crave hope for a better tomorrow.
The lesson that I take away from Sinek’s talk is that if we lead with why, good things happen. Not only do our messages resonate, but our own purpose becomes more clear. And can be a heck of a motivator if you’re struggling to start or sustain.
So…
Why did I start Six Catalysts instead of cozying up in a corner office somewhere?
I believe that a future with more entrepreneurs is a future where local communities and the people in them are more prosperous, vibrant, and resilient.
I’m wired to support people who are building things—by seeking clarity, sharing knowledge, and solving problems.
I help build organizations, as a fractional leader.
I help builders upskill and grow, as an educator and mentor.
I help founders and teams navigate bumpy roads, as a consultant and advisor.
Let’s build something great together.
Gettin’ the Good Stuff
I publish my work in a few different places, and in a few different formats—so that I can meet you where you are and share ideas in the way that you prefer to digest them.
Here’s a list, and what to expect from each.
