Hiring feels broken, and the character of the job market seems very different from the picture painted by official statistics.
If you’ve ever gone looking for a new job, or if you’ve been one of the people designing roles and recruiting candidates, at some point you’ve likely asked yourself… “Why isn’t this better?”
In December, I ran a little experiment with Jennifer Houle—we picked a job ad out of the pile on LinkedIn and roasted it on The Journey, in podcast and video formats. Then, we asked folks we knew (and a couple of complete strangers) to give it a watch or listen and tell us what they thought.
The feedback was pretty positive, so we decided to team up to launch a new podcast and YouTube show. Roast the Post went live in a soft launch, exploratory state this January and we’ve been steadily iterating on it since.
Why?
Because we’re as tired of the system as you are.
Each week, we roast a new job ad and help you decode the hidden story that lives between the bullet points. Our commentary looks at the job ad from two different angles :
If you’re looking for a job like this, what does this ad tell you about the organization and what questions should you ask in the interview to uncover hidden truths for yourself?
and…
If you’re writing a job ad for a position like this, or if you’re designing a role like this, how will candidates judge it and how can you make it better?
This isn’t a show about HR. This is a show that explores the power dynamics of hiring and organizational design in a lighthearted way, and seeks to leave you with practical advice and a fresh perspective (whether you’re looking for a job, or looking for a person to fill one).
The show is available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or on your favourite podcast app. If you also subscribe by email, you’ll get the links to new episodes as soon as they drop, and the bonus companion writeup for each one.
The writeup includes things like :
Sample interview questions for job-seekers who might be searching for a similar role ;
A summary of issues with the job ad and role design, and how to fix them (if you’re writing job ads like this) ;
Sound like something you’d find useful? Check it out here.
Momentum’s contagious, share this with someone who’s building great things.
